It froze her to the spot. It didn’t make sense. She had last seen Cassidy barely twenty-four hours earlier and now he was dead. Novak slowly trudged to stand beside her, his lack of communication seemingly confirming that he too had seen the report. Maureen felt herself go numb, as if all the blood had been drained out of her. Once the shock slowly began to dissipate, she couldn’t decide what emotion had replaced it. It was somewhere between fear and guilt.

Novak spoke, breaking her from her trance. “I’m guessing you had nothing to do with this?”

“No,” Maureen spluttered, realising her mouth had gone dry. “I don’t understand…”

“I’m sure it wasn’t your fault,” he said, clearly knowing exactly what she was thinking.

The photograph disappeared from the screen and the newscaster moved on to another story. That was all the information they were going to get. The two of them stood in silence, struck by the realisation that the stakes of their investigation were getting higher and higher.

Maureen thought through the possibilities. Had Cassidy been punished for the information leak? Or had he done the job himself before anyone had had the chance? She rushed to the door of the station and flung it open before hunching over in the corner of a pebbled patio and vomiting. The sensation had come out of nowhere and she’d had no more than a couple of seconds to react. She rested her hand against the cold wall to support herself. A palm was placed gently on her back and she became aware of Novak’s presence.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yeah,” she muttered.

“The bus will be here in a minute.”

“Okay. I’ll be fine, just give me a moment.” She staggered back to her feet.

The bus pulled into the station and they were soon at the airport, with its strange and ornate glass roof that seemed to protrude into the building, showering it with the sunlight from the outside. The pair hurried to the nearest departures board and scanned the rows for the next available flight to Kiev. After a few moments, Maureen excitedly tapped Novak on the arm; there was one later that day. The Polish airline’s desk was not far away but as they approached Novak held Maureen back before they reached the velvet rope.

“What?” she asked.

“I don’t think we have enough cash left to cover the flights.”

He was right. They were going to have to come up with some more money somehow, risk their cards being tracked or find another way to fund the flight. Novak scratched his chin and Maureen mentally took herself into the contents of her own purse. And then an idea came to her, and she delved inside it to produce a bright red card.

Novak glanced at it dismissively. “They’ll track credit cards too.”

“It’s not mine,” said Maureen mischievously.

“What?”

“It’s my mother’s. She gave it to me when I was young, ‘for emergencies’. Let’s just say I ended up having quite a few ‘emergencies’ in my teens!”

Novak looked appalled. “Won’t she mind?”

Maureen shook her head.
